Black for a Second is a St. Louis band formed in the spring of 2006 to challenge Bad Religion's claim to "The Greatest Band in the World." Plagued by excessive drinking and online gaming they soon realized that they would settle for "Greatest Band on Gravois Avenue with the words black and second in their name."
There was Denny Dyer on bass/guitar, Joe Jordan on vocals/guitar, and Tim Pinkerton on drums (Chris Spina would be added later on guitar). They established a decisively democratic approach to songwriting as they endured several lineup changes. Their intent was to be very emo, however they struggled to find the dexterity to play broken chords or the restraint to insert strategic pauses.
Taking their name from a happening in which Jordan's waifish but determined wife punched him in the head, they began playing shows in the fall of 2006. Their ability to find show venue addresses and arrive with mostly working equipment led to increased exposure in their hometown.
In the spring of 2008 they released their first recording as a three-piece. The seven song effort was recorded by John John at Firebrand and Smith Lee studios... it blew everybody away.
